This area developed with the post-Civil War extension of the street railways in Savannah, thereby allowing citizens to live farther away from their workplaces. This land was the first land developed after the common land in Oglethorpe's original plan had been exhausted. (In Oglethorpe's plan this district had been designated as farm lots.) The eastern segment of the district, Dixon Park, is notable for its African-American heritage, as many black professional families were the first to love in this area. In addition, the Carnegie Library is located here. One of the only parks directly south of the Landmark District, Dixon Park, dates to 1906. Most of the structures date to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
