More about Savannah Landmark Historic District

Back to Savannah communities

Designated in 1966 as a national landmark, the Landmark Historic District is singularly important for its early eighteenth century city plan. This 1733 plan is characterized by open-space squares surrounded by the regular placement of streets and buildings. Although a few late eighteenth century buildings exist, they post-date the original creation of the town plan. There are many examples of notable nineteenth and early twentieth century structures.

The north end of the District is commercial in character with world-famous River Street and all of its adventures, but numerous blocks of the area remain solidly residential. Newcomers are welcomed with an excellent selection of restored homes, the result of 50 years of preservation efforts. New construction townhomes and condominiums, crafted to blend into the historic atmosphere of the District, are also desirable to many. The last decade brought a trend in downtown housing involving the conversion of space above retail establishments into apartments and lofts, which developed along the city's revitalization of commercial buildings.
